Rookie Rugby is a great supplement for existing rugby clubs or for new, developing rugby clubs. Incorporating a youth program serves as a feeder system into other existing programs. This allows for kids to experience the sport at a younger age, therefore increasing a club’s overall membership and competitiveness. Some key activities for a successful Rookie Rugby program within your club include:

Connect with Schools

Schools are the number one place to access kids and promote your rugby offerings. Work with your Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) to introduce Rookie Rugby in physical education classes in schools. This will increase the number of kids in your program substantially because it allows participants to learn some basic skills and build confidence in the game. The Rookie Rugby curriculum incorporates elements of Canada’s Sport for Life Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model and Physical Literacy, making it very attractive to physical educators and school systems.

Connect with Community Organizations

Rugby clubs have been partnering with community organizations all over the country to help provide materials, equipment, and volunteers to help run Rookie Rugby programming. Many community programs serve as feeder programs into rugby clubs and existing leagues. Reach out to local YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Parks and Recreation Centers, and many more! These organizations are looking for new programming and will have the capacity to set up:

  • Rookie Rugby in Multi-Sport Camps
  • One Day Camps/Clinics
  • Multi-Day Camps (Before and After-School Programming, Summer Camps, etc.)
  • Rookie Rugby Leagues
